The life

He was born in Bangalore in 1917, in a city that was then a colonial cantonment and civil station, and he was initiated into monastic life on 22 May 1931, aged fourteen, as the successor chosen by a Jagadguru who wanted to be free of the office. He then trained at Śṛṅgeri for twenty-three years before taking charge as the thirty-fifth Jagadguru on 16 October 1954. That long apprenticeship shows in what he emphasised. He was a formidable scholar, but he taught insistently that the texts are instruments rather than ornaments: he undertook extended periods of intensive meditation himself, wrote on the yoga of the Upaniṣads, and expected students to test the teaching in practice rather than only to establish it in argument. Ask him what a text meant and you were liable to be asked what you had done with it. From 1964 he travelled the length of India, establishing branch monasteries and consecrating temples, and in May 1979 he convened a meeting of the four Śaṅkarācāryas — the heads of the four seats founded at the corners of the country — which is not a thing that happens often in a century. He died in 1989. Between his predecessor's detachment and his own rigour about practice, the modern Śṛṅgeri line makes a point worth noticing: the oldest institution in this tradition has spent the last century arguing for direct verification.
