The year’s observances

The calendar these lineages actually keep.

Almost every date here is fixed by the lunar calendar, so it moves against the Gregorian year — which is why this page tells you how each observance is fixed and then sends you to the institution’s own calendar for the date. Those calendars are authoritative; this page is not.

The calendar

Month by month.

Rest on a marked day, tap it, or move to it with the arrow keys, and a few lines appear saying what it commemorates and why it matters — with a link to the teacher’s page and to the institution’s own announcement. Use the two rows of buttons above the grid to pick a lineage and the kind of date you want to see — birthdays, remembrance days, anniversaries, festivals, or the talks and events the institutions have announced themselves. Anniversaries fixed to a calendar date return every year; observances fixed by the lunar almanac are entered for each year from the institutions’ published lists, and marked provisional until they are. Dates the institutions announce on their own pages are gathered in each day and appear here automatically.

Every week

The standing weekly classes

These recur every week, so they are not entered day by day on the grid. Times are local to the centre. Each centre’s own page is the authority — pauses for a summer recess, a festival or a teacher’s travel are announced there, and the dated exceptions appear in the gathering below as they are posted.

Announced by the lineages · refreshed every day

What the institutions have posted

Gathered afresh each day from the institutions’ own pages: Belur Math; the Vedanta Society of New York, including its page of Swami Sarvapriyananda’s talks and retreats away from New York with each organiser’s registration link; the Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre UK at Bourne End; the Vedanta Societies of Southern California and Berkeley; the Ramakrishna Mission’s residential retreats at Sarada Tapovan; Sri Ramanasramam; the Sringeri Sharada Peetham; Chinmaya Mission UK and West and the Chinmaya International Foundation; Arsha Vidya Gurukulam’s calendar of classes and retreats and the Arsha Bodha Center; and the Divine Life Society. Each line links to the original; nothing is rewritten. Use the Find box above the grid to pull out one teacher, one place or one kind of event — the quick buttons do it in a tap.
